Gardeners South Croydon Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Gardeners South Croydon manages the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public while delivering gardening, landscaping and maintenance services. Our goal is to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, and to provide a safe, tidy and well-managed working environment across all gardens and outdoor spaces where we operate.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Gardeners South Croydon is committed to complying with all applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice. We will take all reasonably practicable measures to protect people from harm arising from our work activities, equipment and materials.
Our primary objectives are to identify and manage risks, provide suitable information, instruction and training, and promote a positive safety culture in all gardening operations, including lawn care, planting, tree and hedge work, soft and hard landscaping, and routine garden maintenance.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that adequate resources are provided to implement this policy. Management is responsible for setting standards, reviewing performance, and ensuring risk control measures are in place and effective.
All team leaders and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of the policy on site, including conducting checks, briefing workers on hazards, and ensuring work is carried out in line with method statements and safe systems of work.
Every employee and subcontractor has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must follow safety instructions, use protective equipment correctly and report hazards, incidents and near misses without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening or landscaping tasks, Gardeners South Croydon will assess the risks associated with the work, the site conditions and the equipment and substances to be used. Risk assessments will be recorded where necessary and communicated to those carrying out the work.
Safe working procedures will be developed for routine gardening activities such as mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, planting, turfing, waste handling, pressure washing and operation of powered equipment. These procedures will consider physical hazards, noise, vibration, flying debris, manual handling demands, and the proximity of the public, neighbouring properties and vehicles.
Site-specific risks, such as steep slopes, uneven ground, confined spaces, water features, underground services and overhead cables, will be identified and controlled as far as reasonably practicable.
Use of Machinery, Tools and Equipment
All machinery, tools and equipment used by Gardeners South Croydon will be suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Defective or damaged equipment will be taken out of use immediately.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as lawn mowers, brush cutters, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and pressure washers. Instructions from manufacturers will be followed and guards and safety devices will never be overridden or removed.
Tools will be stored, transported and used in a way that minimises the risk of cuts, impact injuries and trips, and that prevents unauthorised access, especially by children and members of the public.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment will be provided where required and used correctly by all staff. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, safety helmets and respiratory protection where appropriate.
Staff are responsible for checking their protective equipment before use, reporting damage or defects, and ensuring that it is kept clean and stored properly. The company will replace worn or damaged items promptly.
Control of Substances and Environmental Hazards
Where gardening and landscaping work involves the use of chemicals such as fertilisers, weed controls and other garden treatments, Gardeners South Croydon will assess the risks and apply suitable control measures. Products will be stored, mixed, applied and disposed of in accordance with manufacturer instructions and legal requirements.
Exposure to harmful substances will be minimised by using the least hazardous suitable products, following safe handling procedures, using appropriate protective equipment and preventing contamination of soil, water and drainage systems.
Green waste and other materials will be segregated and disposed of responsibly. We will take care to protect wildlife, plants and adjacent properties during our work, and to avoid unnecessary noise, dust and disturbance.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening tasks often involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners South Croydon will assess manual handling risks and plan work to reduce the need for heavy or awkward lifting wherever possible, for example by using mechanical aids, team lifting and sensible load sizes.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, posture, and pacing of work to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Breaks and task rotation will be encouraged where practicable.
Working With Clients and the Public
When working in domestic gardens, shared outdoor areas or commercial premises, we will take steps to protect clients, visitors and members of the public from hazards associated with our activities.
Work areas will be clearly defined where necessary, with tools and machinery kept under control at all times. Cables, hoses and equipment will be positioned to reduce trip hazards, and appropriate warning signs or barriers will be used when there is a risk from moving machinery, debris or chemicals.
We will communicate clearly with clients about the nature of the work, any temporary restrictions on access, and any precautions that need to be observed while work is in progress or after treatments have been applied.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners South Croydon will provide suitable information, instruction and training so that employees can carry out their tasks safely and competently. This includes induction training, on-the-job instruction, refresher training and, where necessary, formal qualifications for specialist tasks such as chainsaw use or pesticide application.
Supervision will be proportionate to the level of risk and the experience of the workers involved. No one will be asked to undertake tasks for which they have not been adequately trained or supervised.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported to management as soon as possible. They will be recorded, investigated and, where required, notified to the relevant authorities.
Emergency arrangements will be in place for dealing with injuries, fires, exposure to chemicals and other serious incidents. Suitable first aid supplies will be available and staff will know how to obtain medical assistance quickly.
Lessons learned from accidents and near misses will be used to improve our procedures and prevent recurrence.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes in our work activities, legislation or industry guidance.
Gardeners South Croydon is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We encourage feedback from employees, contractors and clients, and will use that feedback to refine our approach, strengthen risk controls and promote a culture where safety is an integral part of delivering high quality gardening services.
This policy is communicated to all employees and subcontractors and is made available to clients and interested parties on request.
